Upper-primary school students are selected for eMentor by the school and teaching staff and matched with mentors.

Students are pooled from our Rural Program schools which allows us to have a sustained impact between consecutive programs as young, relatable figures in their life. They are paired with a university mentor who has similar interests to them and can be matched by same-sex on the school's request.

The students interact weekly for 1 hour with their eMentor through LearnCube virtual classroom over a course of 8 weeks. The students are usually in Year 6 and discuss a range of topics such as the importance of success and goal setting, internet and cyber safety, positive relationships and health and wellbeing. Students learn new skills aiming to build resilience and improve their emotional intelligence.

eMentor sessions are 1 hour long. The mentoring component is based off the Australian Curriculum's General Capabilities. Throughout the session both mentors and mentees communicate with one another using video, text and an interactive whiteboard.

  • Transitioning to High School

  • After sessions mentors debrief and collaborate with each other about effective activities to use with their Mentees for upcoming sessions. The weekly sessions are run in a group at a common location and are led by eMentor coordinators.

    Mentors volunteer 2 hours a week to provide online, interactive support to rural students across 8 weeks.

    Training and Support

    Mentors are trained on mentoring aspects and strategies to build a constructive relationship with their mentee while discussing various topics in the program. Mentors receive training on the Learncube virtual classroom. Mentors are then matched with a rural upper-primary student. Mentors are supported through-out the program by their eMentor Coordinator.


    Mentors are provided with guidebooks and resources and are also encouraged to source both mentoring activities relevant to their student. Mentors are also provided with support and resources from their eMentor coordinator and fellow eMentors. Mentors are provided with headsets and mice but need to have their own laptop with a webcam.

    We mentor upper-primary students from our Rural Program schools Morawa District High School, Nulsen Primary School, Rangeway Primary School and Cue Primary School.

    We run our eMentor programs alternating between, and in partnership with Rural Programs to ensure a stronger, more sustained impact with each and every student.

    We are currently calling for expressions of interest for our upcoming programs in April/March which schools or teachers can do on our School Expression of Interest page.
