Welcome back to the TLG Leaflet! This week we are sharing the fantastic work our TLG Tutoring Centre is doing with its Digication program.

While for many of us navigating the digital web is as easy as riding a bike, for some the fast-changing pace of how we act and interact online can be difficult to keep up with. The challenges of the last year have demonstrated the importance for all Australians, no matter their age, to have the basic skills to get by online. From managing finances to organising health appointments, watching TV and of course communicating with friends and family, digital technology has transformed many aspects of our day-to-day lives.

Teach Learn Grow has recognised the value in providing equal opportunities for individuals to learn these skills and improve digital literacy in the community. This is why TLG’s Tutoring Centre has brought back their Digication program for 2021.

The program was postponed last year because of restrictions due to COVID-19 but has been re-introduced by the Tutoring Centre, with sessions running weekly. Every Thursday afternoon from 1:30 to 4:30pm, tutors tackle a new topic, hosting group presentations as well as one-on-one technology assistance at Subiaco Library. The program has been praised by community leaders, such as library officer Lauren who commented that, “the tutors and managers at TLG have provided an excellent quality of service in delivering one on one tutorial style sessions as well as small group lectures on a huge range of topics. The patience and understanding nature of the tutors has ensured that many of our patrons come back time and time again with all manner of technical queries.”

Recent session topics have included education on digital photography, smart devices and home automation, as well how to use Netflix, Spotify and OnDemand streaming. However, in the past tutors have also covered content such as:

  • Cyber safety,

  • Online banking,

  • Video calling,

  • Smartphones,

  • Social media, and

  • Online shopping.

Library member Martha has attended multiple Digication sessions and mentioned that she has found them extremely useful in her daily routine. “It is all new to me,” she said. “I find the more I listen, the more I learn and the more I know, the more I can do – it’s the digital age. I can now use my iPad to take photographs of the grandkids and pay bills online easily – I am slowly getting better on my iPhone too!”

The TLG Tutoring Centre also provides accessible and affordable tuition for metropolitan students in Years 7-12, covering a wide range of subjects. Hiring top-achieving students from local universities, the Tutoring Centre organises both individual and group sessions for up to four students at similar academic levels. Sessions are run at convenient locations across Perth, with tutors specialising in subjects such as English, Maths and Science, with many more options available on enquiry. 100% of profits from the Tutoring Centre are redistributed back into TLG’s Rural and eMentor programs, so every hour of tuition provides a free hour of help for a student in a rural community.

If you would like to learn more about the Digication program or get in contact with the Tutoring Centre, find them online, on Facebook, or email tutoringcentre@teachlearngrow.org.au.
