Why You Should Join the TLG Executive Team

Teach Learn Grow relies on dedicated volunteers to run and organise the behind-the-scenes in all of TLG’s programs. Our amazing Executive team is a group of volunteers who go above and beyond in striving to bridge the gap of education inequality in rural and remote Australia.

Each semester TLG takes on new members to join the Executive, which provides an opportunity for university students in Western Australia and New South Wales to make a difference in their communities, while also developing their own professional skills and building meaningful relationships with like-minded individuals.

TLG Executive members work together in teams to achieve and uphold the values of excellence, collaboration and innovation. This includes organising the eMentor and Rural Programs, the TLG Tutoring Centre and helping to support these programs through internal organisation, financing and community engagement. It is due to the time and hard work that these members put in that TLG can run smoothly.

Executive alumni leaving this semester, Mitchell Hughes-Owen shared, ‘I have been on the TLG executive for almost 3 years now. I have had many different roles over my time on the Executive, including Coordinator Support Officer, Database Officer, Training Officer and Logistics Manager.’ Speaking on the impact of working in TLG he said, ‘I believe that the work Teach Learn Grow does provides a big impact on the community. Going out to tutor in these rural and remote places not only boosts student’s competency in maths but also prepares them for the future and their journey through high school… Being on the executive is an extraordinary opportunity. Working towards a worthy cause that impacts Australia’s most disadvantaged, all while meeting new people to share the journey with, is an experience like no other.”

Being a part of the Executive team is a great opportunity to get to know a variety of students from different universities and areas of study. Regular social events and skill building workshops provide Executive members time to learn from each other and work together with like minded, passionate individuals.

Jolie Hewitt is a current TLG Executive member. Talking about her experiences on the Coordinator Support Team she said, ‘the best part of my role has been working with like minded people who invest so much effort into creating the best experiences for TLG’s volunteers and students. All of our coordinators and Executive are so passionate about TLG’s mission and values, which means that the environment is really supportive and empowering. I have been so lucky to be part of such an amazing group, and can’t wait for another fantastic semester!’

As a part of the Executive for three years, Ziao Veneziani expressed the enjoyment he has had meeting TLG tutors as a part of the recruitment team. ‘My favourite part is definitely seeing and meeting the hundreds of passionate, like-minded people who want to help ensure equal education throughout the country, no matter an individual’s background or location. Although currently we’re only in WA and NSW, I can definitely see TLG spreading out to our other states in the near future from the immense interest and number of applications we receive every semester.’

The executive also provides amazing opportunities to learn new skills in a variety of areas. As Education Manager, Tilly Johntson  spoke of the experience it gave her in developing tutoring skills as well as leadership. ‘Education encompasses such a large part of TLG,’ she explained. ‘Broadly, we manage resources, tutor training, and content delivered on our programs. Managing a large amount has taught me the concept of organisation but most important clear and explicit communication… I have also learnt the skills that tutors require to be taught when tutoring children from diverse backgrounds. … I will miss my incredible team, we all have a close bond and always motivate and support each other. TLG has given me the opportunity to meet an inspiring group of people who I have connected closely with.’

Other teams within the TLG Executive include University Engagement, Finance, Internal Relations, Systems and our team in NSW. As Communication Officer for the TLG Tutoring Centre, Grace Law shared some of the areas she has improved in. ‘Since joining the TC team at the beginning of this year, I have learnt so many new skills in my role as Communications Officer. From improving my public speaking and presenting skills, to learning more about marketing and teamwork, there are so many opportunities that being in the TC exec team has brought me!’

Matthew Morrish as part of the TLG Marketing team also shared the experiences and freedom it provided to practice and expand his skill set. ‘Being part of TLG exec as the Content officer has offered a vast array of different opportunities. I have been able to develop skills in video and print marketing material creation, as well as had the opportunity to create, develop and publish a podcast series.’ He went on to encourage people from all different backgrounds to apply for the Executive. ‘People should join TLG Exec if they are passionate about what TLG does and want to play a part in helping this amazing organisation grow. It’s also a great way to develop new skills and meet new people who resonate with TLG’s mission.’
