Teach Learn Grow Inc announces Cornerstone Partnerships with WA mining companies

Teach Learn Grow (TLG) is the not-for-profit organisation working to bridge the education gap between rural and metropolitan students.

Every year, in June and December, TLG runs a week-long Rural Program whereby groups of tertiary student volunteers travel to regional and remote communities across WA and NSW. The program provides free one-on-one tuition and mentoring to primary school students experiencing educational disadvantage as a result of their location, background and circumstances.

TLG receives key funding support from its Cornerstone Partners, IGO, Anglogold Ashanti, Gold Fields Australia, and Northern Star Resources, who each provide multi-year funding support for the Rural Program. These partnerships have been key to the organisation’s long term success and ability to continue to provide thousands of hours of tutoring and mentoring over the past several years despite the recent challenges of COVID-19.

TLG has recently welcomed its newest Cornerstone Partner, Pilbara Minerals Ltd, who will be supporting TLG’s impact at partner schools such as Yandeyarra Remote Community School and funding expansion of TLG’s programs to more schools across the Pilbara. The five year partnership will enable TLG to provide tutoring and mentoring to hundreds of students and help to bridge the gaps in student attitudes and achievement.

TLG is also proudly supported by other funding partners from the mining sector who support the Rural Program in schools across the state, including Westgold Resources Ltd, Horizon Power, Panoramic Resources, Fortescue Metals Group, Novo Resources, Atlas Iron, Sandfire Resources, Azure Capital, South 32 and Boab Metals Ltd.

These mutually-beneficial partnerships with companies that operate within the rural and remote communities in Western Australia enable the not-for-profit group to deliver high impact tutoring and mentoring programs to students in need. On average, less than half of students in remote areas will be meeting the minimum literacy and numeracy standards by Year 7. Compared to metropolitan counterparts, students in remote areas are three times less likely to complete Year 12 or an equivalent. TLG partners with organisations who share a mutual objective to improve the educational outcomes of children experiencing disadvantage and address the social disparities between remote and metropolitan areas.

Teach Learn Grow CEO, Bridget Staude says:

“TLG is grateful for the support of our partners in the mining and resources sector whose funding allows our volunteers to travel to dozens of rural and remote communities across WA each year. Our Cornerstone Partnerships are especially important for TLG, as they ensure we can have a long-term positive impact through regular programs at our partner schools and continue to invest in high quality training and resources for our dedicated and hardworking volunteers. “

TLG entered its twelfth year of operation in 2023, and is set to continue its positive impact on rural and remote communities, thanks to its partners. Next month, nearly 250 volunteers will be participating in the Rural Program across WA, and will provide one-on-one tutoring to more than 700 WA kids experiencing educational disadvantage.
